Can somebody recommend places to consider living cheaply in China? I'm looking to avoid densely populated areas that are quiet, clean, and close to nature, but also easy access to the city.

Read a few good things about the Taoist mountain Qingcheng Shan. Not sure though if it has easy access to the city.

Generally, Yunnan Province (especially higher north) is considered exactly what you're describing. It attracts a lot of hippies from within China and is generally very popular with freelance foreigners. Otherwise, it's quite a densely populated country. Sichuan has isolated pockets, as do Qinghai and Gangsu, but life there is hard and language would be close a must... there aren't any western conveniences and takes a long second to reach transport-wise
